February 13 to March 20, 2021

This six-week online class is designed for writers who want to make the leap from traditional academic scholarship to research-based creative nonfiction. We will explore opportunities to experiment with the subjects we know well in ways that are less familiar, using the tools and techniques of creative, narrative, and hybrid nonfiction. In addition to workshopping pages that play with expectations and completing exercises designed to push beyond our comfort zones, we will read and discuss models from some writers on this path—possibly Anne Carson, Valeria Luiselli, Maggie Nelson, Claudia Rankine, Olivia Laing, Wayne Koestenbaum, Gloria Anzaldua, Carter Mathes, David Shields, Karen Olsson, Hanif Abdurraqib, Jana Jarosz, Jenny Boully, Norman Klein, Chelsea Biondolillo, Kevin Young, Ruth Behar, Matthew Gavin Frank, Chris Kraus, and/or Slavoj Žižek. We’ll also consider how such writing in the academy often originates from a position of privilege and how that limitation might be addressed.
